I want you to think for a moment about expectations. When Christmas or your
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
birthday comes, you have expectations about the gifts youΓÇÖll receive. When
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
youΓÇÖre about to receive a visit from a friend youΓÇÖve not seen for a long time, you
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
have eager expectations about what that visit will be like. When a relative has
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
long overstayed their welcomeΓÇöyou have even greater expectations about when
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
they will leave!
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
But thereΓÇÖs another side of expectationsΓÇöthe expectations that are placed on
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
you by othersΓÇöand your own expectations as well. Someone from John
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
OrtbergΓÇÖs church made a list of unspoken expectations that the average person
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
in their community and church has, based on the culture in which they live:
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
[Pastors, feel free to make your own list that fits your community.]
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
ΓÇó You will have good health, live a long life, be slim and physically fit, be toned,
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
have great hair, make-up, and body shape.
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
ΓÇó You will be intelligent, articulate, and computer savvy.
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
ΓÇó You will get into a good school and do well in school. Of course youΓÇÖll be
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
popular.
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
ΓÇó You will be sexually desirable without being promiscuous.
